Who invented the Segway?
Dean Lawrence Kamen. He is an American engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur born in 1951. He also found the nonprofit first with Woodie Flowers.
Has your goal always been the same?
The answer is no. The Segway was invented with the idea of designing a wheelchair that would allow those who needed it to sit higher than the ground. However, the end result was very innovative for the market back then. A product that fit very well so that everyone could visit the streets of any city. Kamen’s hopes were very high. In a first interview with the renowned Time magazine, he stated that Segway “would be for the car what the car was for the horse and the stroller.
Did the founder fall off a cliff and die while riding his own Segway?
Many people think that Dean Kamen fell from a cliff into a river, dying on the spot while using the Segway that he himself had invented. But the reality is very different, since the events did not happen that way. Jimi Heselden, a British businessman and millionaire, bought Segway Icn from Dean in 2010. Unfortunately, one of the times he used Segway he fell off a cliff and died. Since the company was already theirs at the time, many attributed the death to the creator of this innovative invention.
When was the first invented?
Many think that it was invented in 2001, but if we look at its history, we will see how the first Segway patent was filed in 1994 and was granted in 1997. This was followed by others, including the one filed in June 1999. In December 2001, was released publicly in a program called Good Morning America and that is why many think that it was created in that same year.
Why did they call it that?
The word Segway is thought to have been created from the word “segue,” the meaning of which is “smooth transition.” However, segways are known as “personal carriers”.
